Rich history of inns of aurora:
Pleasant Rowland, educator, journalist and philanthropist from Wells College, founder of American Girl, restored the properties in chronological order. She began by repurposing the 1833 Aurora Inn built by Colonel Edwin Barber Morgan. The brick and stately columns of the exterior are complemented by the modernized interiors from 19th century: rich wood furniture, marble bathrooms and antique fireplaces. The ruins of the Grist Mill from old add to the rich history.
The former residence of E.B. Morgan’s Gothic architecture makes it appear unwelcoming. The brightly colored seven-room inn, however, is decorated with ornate chandeliers and artworks from Rowland’s collection. The wraparound deck is dotted with coral-colored plants and softens the exterior.
Zabriskie House, considered the sister property of Rowland House has been refurbished in cool tones, from deep blues to lime greens, with white-trimmed furniture, creating a lighter minimalist look, which emphasizes the art. Rainbow Chair, a renowned art installation by Patrick Norguet that only has one copy at the MoMa, is prominently displayed in the foyer.
